In 2013 I met Melissa Franchi, founder and creative director of Nevaeh Intimates, a luxury boudoir collection capturing her perspective on the true essence of lingerie. It is an artful composite of the energy and glamour inherent in the New York City lifestyle: bold, beautiful, erotic, and elegant.
Initially, what struck me most was Melissa’s fortitude. She was working out of a “hole in the wall” office space, more like a closet, while holding a full-time job. But her passion for her product permeated the entire ambiance. Schooled with over 10 years of experience in the industry, her desire to craft her own thing clearly informed her creative process. The Nevaeh brand is all about sensuality, shape, drape, and seduction. A composite of materials, textures, and adjustable pieces, it is meant to satisfy the feminine shape without conformity.
Melissa was then and is now on the cusp of the emerging Indie Lingerie market, stand alone brands proffered first through social media and pop up shops, uncompromising in their desire to speak for themselves. I took heed of her design concepts because a merchant should never disregard new directions. But born and raised in the mainstream lingerie market, I wasn’t sure of her survival. I should have known better because by perseverance and reverence for her design peers, she gained enough recognition to charge full-time into the process. Nevaeh has appeared in key fashion publications like Vogue, Elle, GQ and more. We, at Lingerie Briefs, have highlighted them more than once. It is said that Neveah means “the secret word to enter paradise”. But all one needs is to spell it backwards in order to grasp its soul: Heaven.
